The plot is conducted through correspondence between the two main characters - Makar Devushkin, a poor civil servant, and Varvara Dobroselova, a young woman who is also in need. During the correspondence, the characters share their thoughts, experiences and hopes. Makar, despite his poverty, tries to support Varya, helps her financially and morally. He expresses his feelings for her, but also realizes that their social status puts obstacles in the way of their relationship.

As the plot develops, it becomes clear that Varya is facing difficulties: herlife is full of suffering and humiliation. She tries to find a job and improve her situation, but circumstances contradict her hopes. Makar remains devoted to her, although he understands that his love cannot change their fate.
